• Wagtail cottage overlooks the beach, there is no direct access from the beach so this means it is very private.

• There is a path just a minutes walk along the lane which takes you onto the beach.​

• From there you can either go right to the lighthouse or left towards Powillimount. On a busy day you can expect to see up to 3 or 4 other people on the beach with their dogs but mostly you have the beach to yourselves.

• The lighthouse is no longer in use, it was built in 1749 and is a well known landmark in southwest Scotland.

• The beach continues further round the point with the sand dunes and golf course on your right and you can see Sandyhills bay in the distance.

• In the other direction is Powellimont, a beautiful secluded cove with caves and rocky outcrops to explore or you can just sit on the rocks and enjoy the view of the Cumbrian hills across the Solway firth.

• It is also possible to walk to Caresthorn via the coast or take the lane through the trees, passing Arbigland(nearly forgotten) gardens and Paul Jones cottage museum.

• You may wish to have a delicious lunch at the ‘Steamboat pub’ and return by bus. There is a reliable bus service linking Southerness to Caresthorn.
